Learning Objectives

Students will be able to round whole numbers to the nearest thousand.

The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
EL adjustments

Introduction

(5 minutes)

  • Draw a number line on the board that shows numbers 0–10. Ask students to identify the number that is halfway in between 0 and 10 (i.e., 5). Then point at the number 2 and ask, "Is this closer to 0 or 10?" Repeat with several numbers on the number line.
  • Tell students that today they are going use number lines to round numbers to the nearest thousand.

Beginning

  • Give students the definition of the following words in their home language (L1) and English (L2): "halfway," "rounding," "closer," and "thousand."

Intermediate

  • Have students state their answers in complete sentences using the sentence frame: "The number ________ is closer to ________ (zero or ten).
